Utilization is typically a “key performance indicator” for agencies (and other service type businesses) as “billable utilization” is how we are largely paid.

Caution: KPIs are great for understanding what’s happening in a business.
AND, over-emphasis on numbers without meaning can skew decision making, especially in the short term & affect healthy decision making.
For example, at times we might be catching up on our ZeitPress framework (to be friendly to our future selves). Over time, this is meant to serve three things (in my view):
- Speed of future endeavours
- Quality of future endeavours
- Increased capabilities / offering
And ultimately increase opportunity, higher profit (or greater price competitiveness)
