Updated:

Categories:

This post outlines a repeatable process for monitoring Google Search Console (GSC) following the launch or major update of a website. It ensures that the site maintains search visibility, performs well, and is free from indexing or crawl-related issues.

Tools & Resources

Recommended Timeline & Time Commitment

  • Total Duration: 4 weeks post launch
  • Time Allocation: 6–10 hours total
  • Recommended Cadence: 2 check-ins per week (30–60 mins each)

GSC What to Monitor (and How Often)

Index Coverage (2x per week)

Check: Indexing > Pages

  • Make sure not indexed pages aren’t growing
  • If they are, download all the URLs in each section and compare to pre-launch to identify problems
  • Not indexed should drop off over the weeks

Fixes:

  • Submit high-priority URLs via URL Inspection
  • Improve internal links to orphaned pages
  • Ensure key pages are in sitemap
  • Remove legacy 404s using GSC Removals or bulk script

Performance & SEO Impact (1x per week)

Check: Performance > Search Results

  • Review clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position
  • Compare with pre-launch or previous 30-day benchmarks

Core Web Vitals (1x per week)

Check: Experience > Core Web Vitals

  • Look for any “Poor” URLs or regressions in LCP, FID, CLS

Fixes:

  • Optimize images and third-party scripts
  • Fix layout shifts and rendering delays

Robots.txt & Sitemap (Initial setup + 1x recheck)

Check: robots.txt file and Sitemap submission status

  • Confirm robots.txt isn’t blocking important pages
  • Ensure sitemap is submitted and shows no major errors

Fixes:

  • Update disallow rules if necessary
  • Resubmit sitemap after major content/URL changes

Screaming Frog What to Monitor (and How Often)

  1. Redirect Chains & Errors (Weekly)
    • Crawl the site with Screaming Frog. Look for:
      • 3xx chains (redirects going through multiple hops)
      • Redirects pointing to 404s
      • Orphan pages (pages not linked internally)
  2. Broken Links (Weekly)
    • Filter for 404 status codes in internal and external links.
    • Fix broken internal links immediately; log and follow up on broken external ones.
  3. Canonicals & Meta Tags (Weekly or Biweekly). Check for:
    • Duplicate canonical tags
    • Missing or conflicting canonicals
    • Title/meta description issues that could affect SEO appearance
