Site/Account Migration Between Servers

Pre-Migration Checklist

  • Verify target server has sufficient resources
  • Confirm PHP versions compatibility
  • Check addon domains and subdomains
  • Note any custom configurations

Step 1: Create Backup on Source Server

  • WHM -> Account Functions -> Create a New Account Backup
  • Select Account to backup
  • Backup Destination: /home (local storage)
  • Options: Check “Backup Everything” including:
    • Home directory
    • MySQL databases
    • Email accounts and data
    • DNS zones

Step 2: Transfer Backup File

Method A – Direct Server Transfer:

#From source server terminal
scp /home/cpmove-username.tar.gz root@destination-server-ip:/home/

Method B – Download/Upload via WHM:

  • Source Server: Account Functions -> Download a Home Directory Backup
  • Destination Server: Upload via FTP to /home/ directory

Step 3: Restore on Destination Server

  • Destination Server WHM -> Account Functions -> Restore a Full backup/cpmove file
  • Select backup file from dropdown
  • Configure Options:
    • IP Address: Assign dedicated IP if needed
    • Package: Select appropriate hosting package
    • Override DNS: Check if using external DNS
  • Click Restore

Step 4: DNS Updates

  • Update “A” Records: Point domain to new server IP
  • If using Cloudflare: Update origin server IP
  • TTL Considerations: Reduce TTL before migration for faster propagation

Step 5: Post-Migration Verfication

  • Test website functionality
  • Verify email accounts
  • Check SSL certificates
  • Tets database connections
  • Confirm cron jobs are working
    • cron jobs areĀ scheduled tasks, also known as automated jobs, that run specific commands or scripts at set times and intervals on the server
